We’ve reached the tail end of the year – a time that naturally invites us to look back, take stock, and clear space for what lies ahead. Every ending is also a beginning, and nature’s rhythms are a constant reminder of that. The cycle continues, and we try to make sense of things, gather our thoughts, and understand where we’re going, before even deciding how to get there.
November is always a peculiar month. Everything slows down – and yet nothing really stops. Harvest is behind us, but there’s still that quiet hum of activity as the year winds down: final bottlings to complete, last shipments to send, reports, budgets, plans. It’s a time when we work as much with our heads as with our hands, and that calls for a different kind of focus.
According to tradition, the benfinita (from ben – well – and finita – finished) is the celebration that marks the end of harvest. A day to pause, catch our breath, and thank those who shared in both the hard work and the joy of it all. And this year, once again, we made time to celebrate it.
Summer’s drawing to a close, and in the vineyard, it’s time to wait. Work in the rows has slowed down – just small, finishing touches: pulling a few leaves to help with airflow, trimming any clusters that are too developed. But the real focus now is elsewhere. It’s about watching. Tasting. Trying to understand when the time will be right.
These days, the vine is living its adolescence: full of energy, growth, and exuberance. After shoot selection, the canes have grown quickly, shooting up past the trellising wires. Now it’s our turn to guide them – without holding them back.
Right now, everything’s racing. The vines are reaching upward, pushing their shoots toward the light with a speed that surprises even those of us who witness their rebirth every year. And we’re racing too, doing our best to keep up.
The season is officially underway. The first buds are peeking out between the rows, and with them, the 2025 vintage starts to take shape. In the cellar, we're preparing for new releases. Outside the cellar, we’re getting ready for Vinitaly – with two great scores in our pocket and our sights set on the biggest project of the year: replanting Madre, a vineyard that’s meant to lead the way forward.
Making wine is like living in a world that’s always in motion. It’s about being present, staying observant, and constantly adapting – and that’s what makes our work so vibrant and ever-changing. Starting in 2025, we’d like to share with you more of what we do: the daily routines, the people who put their hearts and hands into the process, the nature that moves with its own rhythm and connects with our efforts, and the little innovations we try out along the way. From now on, Pippo D’Alessandro, our General Manager, will be the one to take you behind the scenes and share what life is like here at Poggio Antico.
